What is an adverb of time and place?

In Arabic adverb of time is called (Zarf Az-zaman)ظرف زمان, while the adverb of place is calledظرف مكان (Zarf AL-makaan). The word Zarf literally means something that contains something else, we can simply say a container.

In Arabic grammar, the adverb of time shows when the verb happens, while the adverb of place shows the place where it happens.

The adverb of place is the one that shows the place where the noun happens, and it always answers the question ‘where?’.

For example, when saying the pen is on the table (القلم على الطاولة) from the example you can easily understand where the pen is.

Let’s take another example, the student is in school (الطالب في المدرسة). As you can see the adverb place always shows you the place of something

جلست الفتاة على الكرسي.

Time adverb in Arabic grammar

The adverb of time specifies the time when the verb happened, here are some examples:

I met my friends in the morning.

التقيت بأصدقائي في الصباح.

I was late for school yesterday.

لقد تأخرت عن المدرسة أمس.

The teacher punished a student today.

قام المعلم بمعاقبة الطالب.

I met a new friend a week ago.

قابلت صديقًا جديدًا من أسبوع.

I greeted my friend in the morning.

سَلَّمْتُ على صديقى صَباحًا

The train reached at noon

وَصَلَ القطار ظُهرًا

My friends and I will go to the park tomorrow.

سأذهب أنا وأصدقائي إلى الحديقة غدًا.

I will meet my friends next week.

سوف أقابل أصدقائي الأسبوع المقبل.

Adverb in Arabic

Adverbs complete the verb and give more information about when, where, and how many times it happened. Here are some examples:

I study a lot before exams.

أدرس كثيراً قبل الامتحان.

I don’t eat a lot at breakfast.

لا أكل كثيراً في الإفطار.

My friend love chocolate a lot.

صديقي يحب الشوكولاتة كثيرًا.

 

There are some specific words that when you see you will know right away that it is an adverb, like:

A bat sleeps in the day and wakes at night.

الخفاش ينام نهاراً ويصحو ليلاً.
